A three-year-old male eastern grey kangaroo has led police on a chase as stunned tourists arrived back to their cars at Melbourne Airport this morning.

The kangaroo darted away from officers and security teams before licking his arms, which is a sign of stress, prompting officials to call in a wildlife officer to subdue him.

Manfred Zabinskas successfully shot the animal with a tranquiliser gun before assessing him.

The kangaroo will reportedly be kept in captivity and observed by a vet before being returned to the wild.
