Gary Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, has been arrested by police investigating allegations of abuse committed by television presenter Jimmy Savile.

The former pop star was arrested at his London home at 7.15am yesterday morning and was questioned by police before being released on bail on Sunday evening. UK editor Lucy Manning reports:

A Metropolitan Police statement said:

Later in the evening, he was filmed returning to his London home but he refused to answer any questions.

Gary Glitter has been arrested by officers working on Operation Yewtree.

  • Operation Yewtree is a formal criminal investigation

  • It is investigating alleged child sexual exploitation by Jimmy Savile and others

  • The operation began as an enquiry but became a criminal investigation after 200 potential victims were identified
