The Olympic torch will visit the Isle of Man today on day 15 of its 70-day tour around the UK.

38 torchbearers will carry the flame around the island through Douglas, Laxey, Onchan, Ballasalla and Castletown, before the torch is flown by British Airwarys to Belfast on 'The Firefly', where there will be a ceremony to welcome it to Northern Ireland.

The first torchbearer of the day will be 26-year-old Leanne Harper from the island, who was nominated through the LOCOG public nomination campaign for her strength in battling Cystic Fibrosis and her efforts in raising money for research by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. She will start with the Flame at the National Sports Centre in Douglas.

Among the other torchbearers is Isle of Man-born and three-time World Enduro Champion, David Knight, who will be carrying the flame in the sidecar of a TT motorbike.

He will be joined later on the route by Maureen Barnes-Sherring, 73, from Isle of Man, who will be carrying the flame on a horse tram.

Maureen was selected through the Lloyds TSB campaign for her time and dedication to disabled sport. She has been a riding instructor for Riding for the Disabled since the mid 70s and has been Chairman of the Isle of Man Special Olympics Committee since the 90s, in which capacity she has taken young people to every Summer & Winter Games.
