A gunman opened fire during morning classes at a Christian university in California, killing at least seven people and wounding three more, police have confirmed.

Police have identified the suspect in shootings, as 43-year-old One L Goh, who has been taken in to custody after he surrendered at a nearby supermarket.

The dean has confirmed that Goh had been a nursing student at the university.

Police described the man as both a Korean national and a naturalised American citizen from Korea. They said they believed he used a handgun and acted alone.

The Mayor of Oakland Jean Quan described the shooting at Oikos University as a "terrible tragedy".

She called for the city to support the Korean community, where many of the victims were from, and "bring peace back to the city".

Earlier, TV footage showed a chaotic scene as heavily armed officers swarmed into the building in search of the shooter. The footage also showed bloodied victims on stretchers being loaded into ambulances.

Witnesses said the gunman entered a reception area of the college and opened fire before walking into one of two classes in session and spraying the room with bullets.

Paul Singh, whose 19-year-old sister Devinder Kaur was shot in the arm , told Reuters that according to his sister, the gunman said:

TV News' Faye Barker reports on the shooting at Oikos University in Oakland, California that left seven dead and three wounded.

This amateur footage recorded on a mobile phone was filmed outside Oikos University in Oakland as emergency services attended the scene.

Pastor Jong Kim, who founded the school about 10 years ago, told the Oakland Tribune that he heard about 30 gunshots in the building. "I stayed in my office," he said.

Angie Johnson told the San Francisco Chronicle that she saw a young woman leave the building with blood coming from her arm and crying: "I've been shot. I've been shot."

The injured woman said the shooter was a man in her nursing class who got up and shot one person at point-blank range in the chest before spraying the room with bullets, Ms Johnson said.

"She said he looked crazy all the time," Ms Johnson said the victim told her, "but they never knew how far he would go".

Shortly after the shootings were first reported, Oakland Police tweeted a description of the suspect.

According to its website, Oikos University offers studies in theology, music, nursing and Asian medicine.
