Roman Kemp on mum Shirlie: 'I view her as my hero'

Shirlie Kemp and her TV and radio presenter son, Roman, joined the Loose Women to speak about their close bond during our special Mothers Week.

Roman told the Loose Women that he felt incredibly fortunate to have such a good relationship with his mum and has always been able to turn to her for support.

"I've had a lot of close friends go through some real, serious mental health issues. I am so fortunate I have my mum because she's taught me to open up as much as possible even when I was a teenager and I was like, 'Mum, please stop talking'."

He also explained how he was in awe of his mother, who kept family life as normal as possible for Roman and his sister, Harley, when their father, Martin Kemp, was diagnosed with two brain tumours.

"They never really had a clue," Shirley said. "Looking back at any photo of that time, I look drained, but it’s a coping mechanism and you don’t really have a choice. You’ve got to make the best of a bad situation."

Roman - who was too young to understand what was going on at the time - said that he'd heard many stories of her efforts from his parents' friends and viewed his mum as his "hero".

The pair also explained why they'll be spending Mother's Day apart and Roman discussed his recent fitness transformation too.
