Maya Jama supported by boyfriend Stormzy as she reveals: 'My dad's been in jail since I was three'
MAYA JAMA TALKS ABOUT GROWING UP WITH HER DAD IN PRISON
TV presenter Maya Jama joined us to talk about her new documentary, Bad Dads, and growing up with her father in prison.
'My dad has been in jail since I was three and I broke contact when I was 10,' Maya explained. 'My earliest memory is around five when I was visiting him in prison. It was a bit weird, I had a super supportive family around me, I had a stepdad. I never really felt like I was missing out. You'd get your car, your sweets and blankets. It became normal, almost like a road trip.'
But Maya stopped contact as she got older. 'I got a bit older and it was annoying, I didn't want to go and visit,' she said. 'I thought, "I'm a child. I shouldn't have to visit you in jail". He was going in and out of jail, he had loads of little sentences. He was constantly re-offending.'
'You get kind of fed up - one day he was out at my grandparents and knocking on the door and I didn't want to see him. I thought, "You're doing bad things, I don't know you any more",' Maya said.
'In the documentary I decide whether I want to meet up with him or not,' she added.
Maya - who will appear on ITV's Cannonball soon - was supported by her grime star boyfriend Stormzy who tweeted about her performance.
