Matt Johnson opens up about his depression: 'Mental illness has no prejudice. It can attack anyone!'

MATT JOHNSON ON HIS BATTLE WITH DEPRESSION AND TURNING HIS LIFE AROUND

Former This Morning presenter Matt opened up about his experience of depression battle and how he came back from the moment he considered taking his own life.

'Times weren’t so great for me. At the time it was a secret thing I kept to myself,' he revealed candidly.

'It was something I didn’t understand it was a slow build. What’s interesting about any kind of mental illness, it has no prejudice. It can attack anyone.'

Talking about the build up to the night he contemplate suicide, Matt explained, 'It was December 23, the date it happened. I went to Spain to try and cleanse myself. I had really good intentions, I was going to go running and eat lovely food.

'[But] it turned out to be the rainy week in Spain. You know what the measures are like in Spain, I hit the bottle heavily and it was a downward spiral.'

Matt Johnson now works with MIND to help others who experience mental health issues

After a night of heavy drinking Matt decide to end his life but had a moment of clarity and stopped himself.'For me it was the sense of control I had in the moment,' Matt explained. 'I made the decision in my drunken state. I had my leg ready but I felt in control again. I hadn’t felt that way for years and I thought, I want more of this. I want to feel this more.'

Matt was speaking during Mental Health Awareness Week and has campaigned for mental health issues to be spoken out more openly since revealing he had depression.

'If you tell somebody they will be welcoming and cool about it,' Matt says.
