Katie Piper and her parents on surviving the acid attack: 'It had been a life-changing experience for all of us'
KATIE PIPER JOINS LOOSE WOMEN TO TALK ABOUT HOW THE SHOW INSPIRED HER NEW BOOK!
Katie is no stranger to appearing on Loose Women but even she didn't expect a visit would inspire her to write her latest book with mum Diane.
In 2017, Katie and Diane appeared together and shared exerts of the diary Diane kept after Katie was the victim of an acid attack.
'None of that was ever written to be published. Mum agreed to share a lot of it,' Katie revealed. 'I think it was coming on Loose Women, the response on Twitter afterwards was that it was helping and benefiting other mothers, other daughters and that was kind of where the book was born. This is a horrible thing that happened to us, but if we can reframe those thoughts and turn it into something positive, are we not taking ownership back of what happened and taking control of it.'
Katie and Diane wrote the book, From Mother to Daughter: The Things I’d Tell My Child, together.
'Two kids in, I’m up to my eyes in books about sleeping and feeding routines,' Katie said. 'I wanted to put something together that was more what do women really face in the modern world. I know here [on Loose Women] you talk a lot about Photoshop, Instagram, all these pressures. So I wanted to tackle that, but I wanted to tackle, like my mum’s diary said, what do you do when your child goes through trauma, disease, disability, sickness.'
'I always knew it had been a life-changing experience for all of us. But I guess there were lots of parts I was unconscious for, things I didn’t see. My mum’s quite a private person… says me who has dragged her diaries onto telly! I think without those diaries she may never have expressed those thoughts and emotions to me.'
Diane also spoke of her own health battle after being diagnosed with cancer, 'I’m really good thank you. I had some surgery last year after being on this show. Everything went well. Touch wood.'
And Katie’s father David spoke about how proud he how is the pair have turned a negative into a positive.
'I think initially I was just very angry that someone could do this [acid attack] and ruin your life, in just one fell swoop. But anger is very negative,' David told us from the audience. 'When you’re trying to nurse someone who is traumatised, you need positivity and humour. You’ll never get through it otherwise. Now, I’m amazed by Katie. I can’t understand how she’s done what she’s done.'
'I can remember a point where I actually thought, "Do I want her to live?" It looked that bad. We needed humour. When you’re so shocked, even something very small that you wouldn’t normally laugh at, would brighten your life up. Anyone can focus on the negative bits; it’s got to be the positives to get out of it. She is an amazing person.'
