7 things we learnt on Day 9
We saw more than a little bit of friction on Day 9, as battle lines were drawn and the boys went up against the girls in the Race Against The Elements. There was a fantastic feast at stake for the winning team, and with nine very hungry Campmates fading by the minute, tensions ran high. Here's what we learnt from what went down...
1. Leaders who don’t snore together, stay together
After a Camp reshuffle, Toff and Stanley spent their first night sleeping in proper beds at No. 10 Downing Creek. The pair woke feeling refreshed, rejoicing at the lack of snoring.
“Toff I’ve got to tell you, you didn’t snore at all,” Stanley told her from the Prime Minister's seat.
“Neither did you Stanley,’ to which he replied: “Oh there you go, that is the basis of a perfect relationship, isn’t it? What else do you need?”
2. Kezia runs a tight ship
You don’t become a political party leader without being able to give orders. Kezia raised a few eyebrows around the campfire, taking Vanessa to task for not cleaning the pots properly, and giving Amir extra orders.
“There’s a lot of duties that need to be done,” she told the Bush Telegraph.
“Yes, there are people in particular who are not pulling their weight… I’m going to wait until I properly lose it before I name them.”
Something tells us we haven't heard the last of this one...
3. Becky’s missed a calling as a drill sergeant
A competitive streak combined with a serious desire to eat meant there was no holding Becky back after the boys got a five minute head start in the Trial, disappearing into the distance in their helicopter.
“I am fuming,” she said of her female teammates who'd lost in the Jungle Takeaway, adding: “They’ve let us down massively.”
“Becky’s very, very upset. She hates losing,” noted Shappi – who soon bore the brunt of Becky’s annoyance as they set off to catch the boys.
“Right, I need you to focus a bit better now,” the comedian was told in no uncertain terms.
4. A regular fist bump is the key to success
Some friendly encouragement paired with laser-sharp focus was the winning combination for Jamie and Dennis, who coolly and calmly won the Trial, nabbing the ultimate feast for the boys. We think we’ve sussed the secret extra ingredient in their recipe for success, though – frequent fist bumps. Just saying.
5. Counting is a divisive task
There were four parts to the Elements Trial, and it fell to the teams back in Camp to take on the ‘Earth’ section – essentially a counting task. The girls’ strategic approach did the trick, while Stanley, Iain and Amir were left squabbling over the totals.
“If you have piles of 10 it’s very easy to verify if you’ve made a mistake,” reflected Stanley.
“Somewhere along the line a mistake was made,” said Amir.
“We should have let me and Amir count,” argued Iain. “I had a system… my system worked.”
6. The word ‘obstinate’ has never been used so many times in a 90 second period
Iain and Stanley’s disagreement over the counting escalated in a bizarrely eloquent manner in the Bush Telegraph.
“You’re an obstinate man,” said Stanley as Iain defended his counting strategy, to which the radio host replied: “Stanley, you’re the most obstinate man I’ve ever met.”
The word ‘obstinate’ was further used approximately 314 times while Amir sat awkwardly between them, definitely wishing he was somewhere else, and probably wondering what the word 'obstinate' meant, along with the rest of us.
7. Stanley couldn’t be less competitive if he tried
The boys vs girls challenge saw tensions run high in Camp as the Celebs awaited the return of Dennis, Jamie, Becky and Shappi. As they nervously awaited the results of who had clinched the feast, Iain took the opportunity to apologise to Stanley for the earlier disagreement.
“Don’t be silly,” said Stanley. “It’s a win-win situation. If we don’t win, then the girls get to win. And honestly, I don’t think I want a huge meal anyway.”
Not sure the others would agree with you, Stanley...
