Parents warn of henna tattoo dangers after daughter suffers chemical burns

What was meant as a holiday treat turned into a complete family nightmare after seven-year-old Maddie Gulliver was left with severe burns from a temporary henna tattoo.

Maddie, who had the tattoo done while on holiday with her family in Egypt, suffered chemical burns and could be left with permanent scars after the inking went horribly wrong.

Maddie and her parents joined us in the studio this morning to tell their story and warn other holidaymakers of the dangers.

Brave Maddie complained that the "black henna" tattoo was itching shortly after returning home and the pretty swirls soon erupted into a series of painful blisters, which had to be removed by medics at a specialist burns unit.

Doctor Emma Wedgeworth explains that the reaction was caused by the chemical PPD in the "black henna" which is illegal to put in skin products.
