Start The Conversation: Dr Mark Rackley's tips
Watch Dr Mark Rackley's online tips on how to start the conversation about mental health.
1) Ask open questions when starting the conversation: i.e. I've been worried about you, is everything ok? Don't use closed ones
2) Use active listening: really listen and let them talk. Try not to interrupt as it might prevent them speaking freely
3) Not to use negative statements: like "you'll get over it" or "these things happen" or "pull your socks up"
4) Continue conversation in private: pop round to their house or invite them to yours to help them relax
5) Don't assume if someone looks ok they are ok: people can hide it very well, so saying something is always better than saying nothing
6) Take initiative to see if the person is ok: don't assume that other people - i.e. their family or partner has spoken to them
