Scotland brings in tougher drink-drive limits
The drink-drive limit in Scotland has been reduced overnight and motorists have been warned they risk breaking the law when they cross the border.
It brings Scotland into line with most other European countries - but out of sync with the rest of the UK.
In England the current limit is 80 milligrams per 100 millitres - that's the highest in Europe
From today Scotland has lowered it's limit to 50milligrams per 100millilitres
Parts of Europe, Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia have a zero tolerance to driving under the influence of alcohol
While Germany is in line with the new Scotland limit - and nothing for new drivers
The Scottish Parliament at Holyrood unanimously agreed to lower the limit from 80mg to 50mg of alcohol in every 100ml of blood. Holyrood's Justice Secretary Michael Matheson, said the new laws would save lives and Scotland was leading the way for tighter drink-drive limits in the UK.
Mr Matheson said about 20 deaths a year in Scotland were a result of "people getting behind the wheel while over the legal limit". Road safety campaigners are hoping the tighter laws in Scotland will soon mean Westminster will introduce tougher restrictions in the rest of the UK.
