Obesity Crisis: The Great British 'Gut Cut'

It does nothing to address the psychological reasons behind why people overeat

Dr Hilary Jones

Surgeons are calling for tens of thousands more weight-loss surgeries - such as gastric bypasses - to be carried out on the NHS, to help tackle Britain's obesity crisis.

Less than 1% of people who qualify for the surgery are currently having it - and it is assumed that this is because of the stigma that surrounds such surgeries. Surgeons want to increase the number from 6,000 operations per year to a huge 50,000 because they believe the operations will have paid for themselves within three years.

Dr Hilary isn't so convinced. He thinks we should tackle the issue at the source and, instead, encourage nutrition and health education. He also points out that the surgeons are failing to take the cost and psychological issues aligned with further surgeries - such as removing loose skin - into account.
