European election candidates hit out at Brexit stalemate

Both Tories and Change UK candidates going head-to-head in the upcoming European elections have appeared on Good Morning Britain to express their dismay at the current political paralysis.

Journalist Rachel Johnson - also the sister of former foreign secretary Boris Johnson - appeared on Good Morning Britain to explain why she was standing as a candidate for pro-EU party Change UK in the upcoming European elections.

“It’s changing the direction of travel in British politics,” she told the programme.

“We cannot move on from something that happened three years ago that has paralysed both the main parties, who are both in hock to their sectarian wings.”

However, she added it would be unfair to blame politicians for the current state of Brexit negotiations.

“I think it’s really unhelpful… to blame what’s happened on MPs and Theresa May.”

“The problem is not Parliament. The problem is Brexit. It’s like trying to take fresh eggs out of a baked cake.”

Also on the programme with Ms Johnson, incumbent Tory MEP for the South West Ashley Fox admitted: “I wish I could stand down because I want Brexit to be implemented. I don’t want these elections to take place.”

“If House of Commons won’t implement the withdrawal agreement, these elections will have to go ahead.”

In response to the Brexit Party, he said: “We will deliver Brexit. You can vote for as many Nigel Farages as you like. That will not change the numbers in the House of Commons and it will not implement Brexit.”
