Diana's driver tells of harrowing moment he attended her hospital room

As I turned around, the eyelashes and hair of the princess were moving caused by the fan and that just struck me

Colin Tebbutt

Princess Diana's driver has opened up about the "very emotional day" she died, describing how he had to attend to her hospital room in Paris shortly after she was killed in a car crash 20 years ago.

One of the princess's most trusted aides, Colin Tebbutt told Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard of how he found himself taking care of practicalities in her room, lining the windows with blankets so people couldn't see in and getting fans to lower the temperature.

"It’s very difficult and emotional to see a person lying in a bed and not in a mortuary," he told us.

"I went and got some fans to cool the room down. As I turned around, the eyelashes and hair of the princess were moving caused by the fan and that just struck me. I had to turn away, think about it and then grip myself back and get on with what I was doing."

Colin went on to talk about the princess as a person and employer, describing her as "very royal".

"There was a line. You don't cross that line," he said.

However, Diana also had "a tremendous sense of humour" and treated her employees with respect. "I never had a cross word in two years," Colin said.
