Hitched? Don't miss out on marriage allowance
Are you married? You may be due a free £632, theme park discounts, £5 off railcard, 25% off Adidas and pizza trick. These are our Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis’ Deals of the Week.
Remember, deals can change quickly, even while I’m on the programme. So always double-check the terms and conditions before spending. Plus, while I hope these deals will save you cash, don’t spend if you can’t afford it, don’t need it, or won’t use it.
Free £632 if you’re married or in civil partnership (not just cohabiting)
Back in April 2015, the Government launched a new tax-break for married people (or civil partners), but out of the 4.2m eligible couples for the marriage tax allowance only 1.8m have claimed it.
You’re eligible if one of you pays the basic 20% tax and the other’s a non-taxpayer. The basic-rate taxpayer can transfer £1,150 of their personal allowance to their spouse, which means £1,150 of income you would’ve paid 20% tax on is now tax-free, a £230 gain.
Plus you can back claim if you missed out too, like Fran who tweeted “@MartinSLewis thanks Martin for info on marriage allowance claimed and got over £400!” And since 6 April, you can claim back an extra year so it’s now £632, much of which will come as a cheque. If you think you may qualify for more help and to claim read Martin’s ‘full Marriage tax allowance’ guide.
Summer theme park discounts
If you’re planning on a trip to a theme park this summer, there are two deals on right now, which with a bit of forward planning can save you £50ish+ per person on each visit…
2for1 at Merlin Attractions: Buy promotional packs of Kellogs cereal - including Rice Krispies, Frosties, Crunchy Nut and Squares, normally £2-4ish at supermarkets - and on the box there’s an ‘adult goes free’ voucher that works at 30 Merlin attractions across England and Scotland (there aren’t any in Wales or Northern Ireland), such as Legoland, Alton Towers, Thorpe Park, Sea Life Centres, Madame Tussauds and The Dungeons. The voucher works when you buy a full-priced ticket (adult or child) at the entrance gate, which can cost over £50, so this effectively is a 2for1 deal. In fact, it actually works out better if you’re an adult going with a child as child tickets tend to be cheaper. The voucher’s valid until 30 June 2018, so stock up now to use for the summer. There are some excluded dates.
£51 for unlimited Thorpe Park entry: Until this Sunday (23 April) on the Thorpe Park website you can get 26% of its an annual pass, so it’s £51.50, instead of the normal £70. This makes the annual pass £1 cheaper than the price of a normal one-day on-the-gate adult ticket, which costs £52.50 – so definitely worth getting compared to the 2for1 as long as you’d go twice.
Martin’s Quickies:
£5 off family & friends or 16-25 railcard: Go online to theNational Rail Railcard website and enter the code EASTER5 before 11.59pm Monday 24 April, and you’ll be able to get £5 off an annual Family & Friends Railcard (gives you a third off train tickets for up to four adults when travelling together with up to four children aged 5-15 getting 60% off) or a 16-25 Railcard (gives you a third off most train fares) so it’ll be £25 instead of £30. Even if you don’t use the train that often, just one decent-length rail trip costing more than £70 can save you more than the £25 cost of the railcard.
FLASH 25% off Adidas: Go online to Adidas on Tuesday 25 April only (00.01am to 11.59pm), and you’ll be able to get 25% off most items, including its clearance items, which are already up to 50% off. For example currently you could get men’s sweat pants for £31 in the clearance, down from £45, which could be £23 in the sale. Or a women’s track jacket for £35 in the clearance, £50 before, could be down to £26 in the sale. There’s no code needed, the discount will automatically be applied at the checkout. Delivery is £3.95 or free if you spend over £50.
5 pizzas for £2.25: Currently there’s special promotional packs of Dr Oetker Ristorante pizzas (it’ll say ‘Make Midweek Matter’ on the box) that have a code inside which’ll give you access to print a £1 off coupon on its website. And until Wednesday 3 May Asda’s reduced the pizza to £1.25 from £2.50. So go there and buy a promotional pizza for £1.25 then print of the coupon to get £1 of your second one, making that 25p. You can do this up to four times per household – so you get 5 pizzas for £2.25. Morrison’s also has the Pizza on sale at £1.50, until next Sunday (30 April).
