Candles lit in memory of WW1 sacrifice
Single candles have been lit across the country as households turned their main lights out at 10pm to remember the centenary of the start of WW1.
Downing Street, national monuments and households all paused to remember the 17 million who gave their lives in the four-year war.
Great Britain declared war on Germany on August 4 1914, and joined one of the most harrowing fights in modern history.
