Unsafe roads biggest concern for parents
As a poll by transport charity Sustrans tells us that more than 40 per cent of parents of five to 11-year olds say they are more concerned about road safety for their children, than 'stranger danger', Jonathan Swain brings us more information about how we really feel about road safety near our schools...
How will you take your child to school today? If you're concerned about their safety well, closeting them in the car may not be the safest way. More cars on the school run will only make roads outside our schools more dangerous.
A report by Sustrans the sustaniable transport charity has revealed that:
*18% of parents said their child had experienced a vehicle not stopping or stopping too late at a pedestrian crossing
*13% said their child had experienced a speeding vehicle nearly hitting them while crossing the road
*5% said their child had been hit by a vehicle while walking
Parents said that slower speeds, more dedicated walking and cycling routes plus safer crossings were among the traffic measures that would allow their children to walk and cycle to school more often.
Something to think about as parents run around the house preparing breakfast, pack the school bag and then jump in the car as they rush to get the children to school on time.
