Tips for coping with everyday pain
If you’re managing joint and muscle pain, we’ve teamed up with Voltarol to share some helpful daily tips to help ease the burden.
Move your body
A little movement can do a lot of good. Walking, swimming, and tai chi are considered gentle on joints and good for beginners.
Even simple stretches can help you maintain your mobility and range of motion – and help keep pain at bay.
Reducing stress
Negative feelings can increase the body's sensitivity to pain, but deep breathing and meditation are quick and simple techniques that help your body relax.
Many phone apps, online videos and DVDs offer guided meditation. Or simply find a quiet and comfortable location, block out any distracting thoughts, and focus on your breathing.
Journalling
Keep a journal of your pain each day and note what activities may have helped or hindered. Try to do more of the things that have positively impacted your day.
Reach out to friends and family
Dealing with pain can feel isolating and so the best remedy can often be sharing your thoughts and feelings with those closest to you.
If you can’t get out to visit people at the moment, simply phone a friend, or chat to your neighbour over the garden fence. You could even join an online group where you can share experiences and offer each other support.
Lead a healthy lifestyle
Give your body the best by leading the healthiest lifestyle you can - avoid smoking, get enough sleep, and eat clean.
An increase in weight could put more strain on your joints, so try and maintain a healthy balanced diet.
Give Yourself Down Time
Don't push too hard. Set limits. One of the best ways of alleviating joint pain is to get plenty of rest and relaxation. This will restore energy, as well as allow the body to repair itself naturally.
Distract yourself
Shift your focus so the pain you’re experiencing isn’t the only thing on your mind. You could find a new hobby like photography, sewing or knitting – all great for when your mobility is restricted.
Practise good sleep habits
Getting enough sleep is important for managing pain and promoting healing. Make your bedroom quiet and dark, ban electronics from the bedroom, and establish a regular schedule for going to bed and getting up.
