Shadow Foreign Secretary: The US Election Outcome Will Set The World On 'Very Different Paths'
Shadow Foreign Secretary Lisa Nandy has highlighted the "huge amount riding on the outcome" of the US election for Britain.
The Labour MP told Piers and Susanna that Britain is not "just a disinterested observer in this election' and that "what America does, matters."
“This election is momentous for the world. It will set the world on two very different paths depending on the outcome," she said.
Following the election, Donald Trump has claimed - without providing evidence - that there was "massive fraud" in the voting.
Speaking just after 7.20am UK time - 2.20am in Washington - Mr Trump said: "This is a fraud on the American public, this is an embarrassment to our country.
"We were getting ready to win this election - frankly we did win this election. So our goal now is to ensure the integrity for the good of this nation. This is a very big moment.
"This is a major fraud on our nation. We want the law to be used in a proper manner. So we will be going to the US Supreme Court, we want all voting to stop."
Reacting to this, Lisa Nandy said if Labour were in government right now they would be making it clear that democracy in America must be respected and that a legal dispute that dragged on “would not be in anyone’s interest” during a pandemic, especially.
“I think the right of the American people to have their votes counted is the very immediate and pressing challenge, that is at stake. We have just had the extraordinary spectacle of one of the Presidential candidates standing in the White House suggesting American citizens' votes should be discounted and should be ignored," she added.
"That is a very serious situation indeed… the key thing right now is that those votes are counted and that democracy is upheld in America, it matters to us all in the world that this happens.”
