School holidays High Court battle

A landmark High Court ruling could see thousands of parents refusing to pay school holiday fines.

Defiant father-of-three Jonathan Platt successfully avoided prosecution after he refused to pay a fine for taking his child out of school for a holiday.

Mr Platt was penalised by the Isle of Wight Council after he took his family to Disney Land during term-time despite an absence request being rejected by the school.

However, a magistrate overruled the fine as his daughter had attended school regularly.

The Isle of Wight Council has brought the case to the High Court to seek clarification on the law.

If Mr Platt wins it could be a huge victory for parents, but he faces a hefty legal bill of up to £25,000 if he loses.

Mr Platt has told Good Morning Britain he refused to pay the penalty because it ''criminalised'' him as a parent.
