Parents of Megan Lee speak after takeaway bosses are jailed following nut allergy death
The heartbroken parents of 15-year-old Megan Lee - who died after suffering an allergic reaction to a takeaway meal ordered online - have spoken for the first time on camera about the death of their daughter.
Both the owner and manager of the takeaway have been jailed after being convicted of manslaughter by gross negligence. Megan, a nut allergy sufferer, died from an asthma attack after she ate food from the Royal Spice takeaway in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire two years ago.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Megan’s mum, Gemma Lee, said she feels justice has been done. She explained: “Regardless of the sentencing and how long they got. We believe this is going to raise awareness”.
She continued to stress how she wants Megan’s legacy to help others - and above all avoid another family having to go through the same thing.
She said: “We can’t change our story but we can help it stop being rewritten in somebody else’s life. That’s the ultimate aim for us now really.”
In the emotional interview, Megan’s dad, Adam Lee, explained how Megan and her friend had been “sensible enough to put her allergies down," on the takeaway order, making the restaurant aware certain foods posed a danger to her.
However, the meal delivered was later found to have a "widespread presence" of peanut protein. Five days after Megan's death on New Year's Day last year, the restaurant was closed down following an inspection by Trading Standards and environmental hygiene officers.
Speaking for allergy sufferers, Gemma continued: “ [People] should be able to eat food and able to eat it safely regardless of where it comes from... They need to put the processes in place, the Trading Standards are there to help”.
She concluded: “Until these improvements are made, I wouldn’t order from takeaways".
