Are parents to blame for overweight children?

Parents of overweight children are suffering abuse according to a Good Morning Britain and OnePoll survey published today.

A quarter of parents say they've been judged by others for having a heavy child, and 70% of parents assume others think they're a bad parent because their child is overweight.

With an estimated one third of UK children now classed as overweight, are parents to blame for Britain's ever expanding childhood obesity problem?

This morning, we're discussing this with journalist and mum-of-one Sally Windsor who says parents who continue to feed their 'greedy' children junk food and takeaways are 'disgusting'. And on the other side of the argument is Professor of Exercise and Obesity at Leeds Met University, Paul Gately, who believes childhood obesity is a complex issue and society needs to be more understanding.

  • Almost 70% of those surveyed say there wasn't a childhood obesity problem when they were young.

  • Almost 70% say kids today eat more junk food compared to when they were young.

  • One third of parents say they worry about their child's weight.

  • 7 out of 10 parents think other parents assume their bad parents if their child is overweight.

  • 25% of parents say people treat them differently because their child is overweight.
