Oscars: Stars show support for gun control and #MeToo in politically charged ceremony

It was always expected that the 90th Academy Awards would be sparking, glittering yet full of politically charged messages. After all, it is the first ceremony of the post-Weinstein era.

Talk of Hollywood's most recent scandal dominated the conversation on the red carpet, celebrities and nominees spoke out about those who had been accused of sexual harassment in the TV and film industry and expressed their support for the #MeToo campaign.

Some said it would be a night of black dresses, but instead the red carpet saw an array of colourful and bold hues. Celebrities and nominees also wore orange flag pins, a silent statement against gun violence. Last week's shooting at a school in Parkland, Florida, in which 17 innocent victims were killed by a gunman, reignited the gun debate in the US and the need for reform.

There was rapturous applause as Mary J.Blige performed Mighty River. The song is nominated for Best Original Song, coming from the soundtrack of Mudbound. A performance of This is Me from The Greatest Showman rated well, but it was Remember Me from Coco which took the gong - it's second of the night.

Whilst presenting the award for the best documentary short subject film, Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph mocked how there are "plenty more white people to come" - a joke comes in reference to the #OscarsSoWhite - a campaign demanding more black and ethnic minority actors recognised for their roles in Hollywood productions.

It wasn't the only political statement of the evening. Whilst presenting the award for best production design, Kumail Nanjiani said 'we stand with you' in reference to so-called "dreamers", immigrants living in the United States under legislation which is set to be repealed.
