GPs are turning to alcohol and drugs to cope with job pressure

I was drinking every night to relieve the stress

Joe McGilligan

An exclusive investigation by Good Morning Britain reveals that nearly half of GPs have reached a breaking point from stress, with a survey showing that 15 percent of them have turned to alcohol and prescription drugs because of work pressures.

Today, after 25 years working for the NHS, GP Joe McGilligan told us that he plans to leave the NHS because the workload is unbearable - and revealed he even once thought of killing himself with a chainsaw after the pressures of his job left him depressed.

It comes as a survey compiled by GMB and Pulse Magazine found that 45 percent of GPs think that stress and burnout has affected their patient care over the past 12 months.

This morning we were also joined by Dr Clare Gerada who has set up a surgery specifically for stressed out doctors.
