Sue Jameson on UKIP's political earthquake
The Liberal Democrats have been left with just one MEP - after the electorate rejected their pro-European campaign.
Sue Jameson tells us more in her blog...
It's not often a politician can claim to have shaken up a hundred years of politics but Nigel Farage can rightly claim to have set off a big rocket in the faces of Westminster politicians.
UKIP are the winners of the European elections here and they have grabbed their votes from the other parties, mostly the Tories and Lib Dems.
There is no positive spin you can put on the result for Nick Clegg's party, they have kept just one MEP which is a bit of a massacre really - o cosy Lib Dem dinners in Brussels. it's a portion for one!
In fact even though the Conservatives have lost seven seats with most votes counted, I don't sense much despair at the top of the party because they're were so close to Labour instead of just watching their tail lights in the distance.
However, the big question: will these results translate into a "Shake it all about" General Election?
The answer is probably that they won't change the situation much in terms of UKIP gaining Westminster seats (though Nigel Farage could well be sitting on the green leather seats by this time next year.)
What is far more likely is that UKIP will split the vote in marginal constituencies and that could cost David Cameron dear and could deny any party a clear majority.
But Foreign Secretary William Hague has told us this morning, once again, there will not be a pact with UKIP...
