EU's Donald Tusk taunts May in 'no cherry' Instagram post

European Council President has taunted Theresa May's Chequers Brexit plan saying that it "will not work" at a meeting of European leaders in Salzburg, Austria.

The proposal from the British PM would see the UK leave the European Union but cherry pick sections of legislation that it wishes to continue to abide by.

It would mean that the UK would keep parts of the single market, stop free movement of people and give EU courts "joint jurisdiction" over British law - and vice versa.

Tusk later posted on Instagram an image of himself and May with a selection of cakes. In the caption, he said: "A piece of cake, perhaps? Sorry, no cherries."

Users on the social media platform had mixed responses to the 'political mic drop', with some commenting that the post was "savage", others adding "Brilliant" and laughing emojis.

May told reports at the Austrian summit: "I'm negotiating and I'm negotiating hard in the interest of the British people, and negotiating to deliver on what the British people voted for in the referendum.

"I am also clear that if we're going to deal with the commitments we've made in relation to Northern Ireland, we do need to ensure that there is no hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland."

She continued: "We both agree there can be no withdrawal agreement without a legally-operative backstop. But that backstop cannot divide the United Kingdom into two customs territories, and we will be bringing forward our own proposals shortly.
