Christine McGuinness pushes for autism awareness

Christine McGuinness has opened up to Good Morning Britain about the ups and downs of raising twins with with autism.

“I felt like more of a carer than a mum,” said the mum.

“It’s only gotten easier in the last year.”

Christine said she and her husband Paddy discovered their twins Leo and Penelope were autistic when they were 3-and-a-half years old.

Despite the challenges, Christine has never shied away from talking about her children's condition, and has openly spoken about challenges in the past. She believes this can help other mothers with autistic children to break down the stigma and raise awareness on the condition.

"It just makes sense to teach people about this condition, The more people that understand about it... that's what's going to help," she said.

She says she’s proud to be able to help teacher others about autism, and as part of World Autism Awareness Month, she will be holding the star-studded charity Twinkle Ball for the National Autistic Society.

One in 100 people in the UK are on the autism spectrum.
