Calls for killer of James Bulger to have anonymity removed after child sex crime conviction
The father of James Bulger is calling for lifelong anonymity given to one of his killers to be lifted. Ralph Bulger wants to see his son's killer unmasked after a judge sent him to prison for child sex charges.
Jon Venables, who now uses a new identity, has been locked up for 40 months after being found to be in possession of images of child sexual abuse. It is his second stint in prison.
The Solicitor and Police Liason officer who initially worked on the case this morning gave their backing to the idea. They told Good Morning Britain Venables had "had his chances".
Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, both 10-years-old at the time of the crime, were convicted and each served 8 years in prison. Their release in 2001 saw them adopt new names, legal orders guaranteed their anonymity - a move that caused a great deal of controversy.
Mandy Waller was the family liaison officer on the murder investigation. She joined James' mother within an hour of him disappearing, she told Good Morning Britain: "I think that he had a predilection for young children from a young age. They should be monitoring him more closely when he comes out and taking away his anonymity."
Laurence Lee was Venables' solicitor back in 1993, he said: "I have every sympathy with the Bulger family. If I were in their shoes, I'd be clamouring as loudly as they are for his anonymity. He's had his chances. Anonymity has been wasted on him."
A new documentary about the murder airs on ITV tonight, marking 25 years since James' death - one of Britain's most notorious and sickening crimes. Watch it on the ITV Hub.
