111-year-old Brit becomes the oldest man in the world

111-year-old Brit Bob Weighton has become the oldest man in the world following the death of the previous Japanese holder.

The former teacher and engineer from Hampshire, who was born way back on 29 March 1908, takes the record after 112-year-old Chitetsu Watanabe died in Japan.

Watanabe sadly passed away on Sunday only days after receiving the Guinness World Records certificate.

Ever the gentleman, Weighton humbly accepted his new title: "I don't really feel satisfied because it means someone else has died."

Weighton will receive the official confirmation from Guinness World Records once an investigation into the world's oldest man is complete, a spokesman said.

Although it might seem like an amazing feat to many, Weighton was rather more matter of fact about his new title.

"I just accept it as a fact. It's not something I ever intended, wanted or worked for but it's just one of those facts of life," he said.

"You might find it amazing but it's just one of those things."

Weighton already shared the title of Britain's oldest living person with Joan Hocquard, from Dorset, who he shares a birthday with. Incredibly, until Alfred Smith died last summer, all three supercentenarians split the title as they all had the same birthday.

Weighton has lived through two world wars and seen England win the World Cup.

There are around 50 women who are older than Weighton and Hocquard with the world's oldest person 117-year-old Kane Tanaka living in Japan.
