Babies choking affects 40 per cent of parents

A mother who performed first aid on her six-month-old daughter is calling for all mothers to be aware of the dangers of choking. Sarah Turney was feeding her daughter Penny a jacket potato and left the room for a few minutes and came back to find she had stopped breathing - but luckily she was trained in first aid and was able to save her daughter's life.

St John Ambulance has revealed that 80% of parents don't know the correct technique to save their baby and has consequently launched a new advert to teach them what to do.

The campaign features celebrities including David Walliams, John Hurt, Johnny Vegas and David Mitchell.

St John Ambulance CEO, Sue Killen, said: "Knowing what to do in an emergency can be the difference between life and death, especially with something like choking.

"We all know how time pressed parents are so this film makes it as easy as possible to learn first aid – in less than 40 seconds we can all know a skill that could save a life. We hope people watch and share the video with their friends and family so more people have the confidence to act in an emergency."
