Are we taking too much medicine?

Have you been prescribed drugs you don't need? Had an operation you shouldn't have? Been over medicated, over treated, overawed by your doctor?

This could be the case, according to a campaign to reduce the harm of too much medicine and unnecessary intervention which is being introduced in the UK by the The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges.

The Choosing Wisely programme, a US initiative, aims to help tackle the threat to human health posed by over diagnosis and the waste of resources on unnecessary care.

Medical journal BMJ says too much medicine is harming patients and some common practices of prescribing drugs should be stopped. It also reports that doing nothing can often be better for health and drugs are often over prescribed because of commercial conflicts of interest, biased reporting in medical journals, defensive medicine, health illiteracy of doctors and patients.

Do you think GPs prescribe drugs too quickly? If you think you've been over diagnosed or over prescribed medication, let us know.
