Are the rumours true? Is there a sunny bank holiday weekend ahead?
Yes, I’m the bearer of good news for once and it’s not just a weekend, it’s a bank holiday weekend! It looks like the weather didn’t getthe memo. After an unsettled week of weather with low pressure in charge and some torrential thunderstorms, high pressure shows its hand bringing fine weather. It’ll take a while for all of us to get in the same sunny boat, but byMonday we’ll all be enjoying the May sunshine… I can smell the BBQ’s already.
Weekend forecast:
High pressure will build in from the north during the day on Friday. It’ll do two things - bring drier, sunnier skies, but also colder air. So while we say hello to sunshine we also see the return of night time frosts,it’s very late in the year, so gardeners beware!
Scotland and Northern Ireland will get off to a chilly, but beautifully sunny start on Friday. Further south through England and Wales many of us will wake to rather grey and cloudy skies, but fear not, the sunshine is coming your way too and it’ll brighten up during the day.
The price we pay for a sunny morning on Saturday is a cold start with much of the country experiencing a widespread ground frost and pockets of rural air frost. England and Wales will stay dry and sunny throughout with temperatures rising to 15 Celsius (59F). However Scotland and Northern Ireland will see a weak weather front moving in. This will bring cloudier skies and outbreaks of rain through the day.
The rain will move southwards on Sunday to give much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England a rather wet day. In contrast, southern England and Wales will hold onto the high pressure and have another sunny day after a cold start.
The good news is the dry and sunny weather spreads back across the UK in time for bank holiday Monday and in the mild southwesterly winds temperatures will be boosted to a warm 20 Celsius (68F) in the southeast. Perfect for a walk or family gathering.
Will it last through next week?
No, unfortunately not. It’ll turn more unsettled throughTuesday as weather fronts push in from the Atlantic. Low pressure will heraldthe change to more wet and windy conditions, especially on Wednesday. So make the most of this weekends weather.
It’s true what they say ‘Ne’er cast a clout before May is out’.
