Man jailed for 12 months for offensive online comments

Keegan Jakovlevs has been jailed for 12 months after using Facebook to call for all British muslims to be killed after the Manchester terror attack.

This comes after the Crown Prosecution Services issued new guidelines in July warning that online abuse and hate speech will be treated as seriously as offline offences.

Earlier we spoke to Naomi Firsht, who doesn’t condone Keegan’s hateful Facebook comments, but defended the right of free speech online. She said: “When we talk about free speech we have to make space for vitriolic speech.”

Sitting on the other side of the fence was Kevin Maguire, who was adamant that people have to take responsibility for comments made online and believes that Mr Jakovlev's comments were "inciting hatred".
