And so, after 50 matches spanning a month, the champions of Europe will finally be crowned – maybe after 90 minutes but there's also the possibility of extra-time and a penalty shootout.
After an unconvincing start, Cristiano Ronaldo has found form and inspired Portugal to only their second ever major tournament final appearance (as hosts of Euro 2004, the Portuguese lost to underdogs Greece in the final) – a major international title is the one big trophy that has eluded him.
Hosts France beat a dangerous Germany outfit in the semi-finals but can they handle the pressure and expectation of an entire nation on Sunday?
