Play had to be stopped three times in the first half in Lille as Swiss players temporarily left the pitch to replace their torn shirts, with Arsenal's latest signing Granit Xhaka, Admir Mehmedi and Breel Embolo among those affected.

Puma, official kit supplier to the Switzerland national team, said in a statement: "Seeing our shirts being ripped in a match last night was the first time we have experienced such an issue. Five Puma teams have played 10 games in this tournament without such problems.

"Our product people are currently investigating the shirt material. We will provide a further update when we have one."

Asked by German newspaper Blick about the ripped shirts after the match, winger Xherdan Shaqiri joked: "I hope Puma does not produce condoms."
