Player ratings: Northern Ireland 0-1 Germany
Northern Ireland had to put up a lot of resistance to ensure they only lost 1-0 to Germany - here are how their players performed.
MICHAEL McGOVERN: A truly magnificent performance from the Hamilton goalkeeper. Made a string of brilliant and brave saves under extreme pressure. 9
AARON HUGHES: Retained after his role in the 2-0 win over Ukraine, Northern Ireland's most capped outfield player was given a torrid time by Germany's clever attacking patterns. 5
GARETH McAULEY: Like Hughes, McAuley's 36-year-old legs were not made to keep track of this Germany team. Always a passionate performer but found himself dragged out position far too frequently. 5
CRAIG CATHCART: The Watford centre-half has probably never had quite such a testing evening in international football. Fire-fighting from the off but never gave in. 6
JONNY EVANS: Comfortably the best defender in a green shirt. Again asked to do a job at left-back, the West Brom man was disciplined and touch-tight to his men throughout. Accomplished. 8
CORRY EVANS: Assigned an unflashy role in the centre, the younger Evans brother did nothing to grab the spotlight but never stopped running for the cause. 6
STEVEN DAVIS: The inspirational captain had an unusually quiet first half, cowed into anonymity by Germany's dominance. But he found a way into the match after the break and showed signs of his class. 6
OLIVER NORWOOD: Had precious little opportunity to show off his dead ball prowess and his passing range was compromised by the lack of shirts in front of him. 5
STUART DALLAS: An attacking winger by trade, he was mostly asked to supplement the containment effort on either flank. Beat his man on a couple of rare forward surges. 6
JAMIE WARD: Harried and charged, doing his best to drag his side up the field. Looked the likeliest creator of a meaningful counter-attack. 7
CONOR WASHINGTON: Handed a thankless task as an isolated striker. Ran the channels as well as he was able but craved support. 6
Subs:
KYLE LAFFERTY (for Washington, 59mins): The qualifying hero was again left out of the XI but added fresh legs for the final half hour and played his part. 6
JOSH MAGENNIS (for Ward, 70): Came on and took the central striking role but saw little action. 5
NIALL McGINN (for C Evans, 83): On to help hold the line at the close. 5
