Fomenko to quit Ukraine after Euro 2016
Ukraine coach Mykhaylo Fomenko has confirmed that he will step down at the conclusion of his team's disastrous Euro 2016 campaign.
Ukraine will finish bottom of Group C regardless of their result against Poland on Tuesday after compounding defeat to Germany with a shock loss to Northern Ireland in Lyon on Thursday.
Fomenko believes a high-profile altercation between Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Taras Stepanenko and and Dynamo Kiev winger Andriy Yarmolenko towards the end of the Ukrainian league season contributed to his team's limp performances in France.
> > What sense does it make to continue after failing with the task that was set for the tournament? > > > "I did not feel the united team that clinched the spot at the Euros finals. I paid attention to this during warm\-up games against Cyprus and Wales. Everyone saw what was going on at the end of the Ukrainian championship. This situation affected the team's psychology. > > > "I would like peace and friendship to prevail inside our team. As a man, I am used to being responsible for my actions. I admit my fault. I did it all wrong in that situation. > >
Fomenko also endorsed Ukrainian legend Andriy Shevchenko as his potential successor after reports linked the former AC Milan and Chelsea striker with the post.
> > Why not? He has experience in football, finished coaching courses and has got his PRO\-diploma. God bless him to be as good a coach as he was a player. > >
