Five things we learned: France 1-0 Peru
Kylian Mbappe is the man in form and Peru are yet to score at the World Cup. Five things we learned from France's nervy 1-0 win over plucky Peru.
MBAPPE IS THE MAN IN FORM
Kylian Mbappe's history-making goal came from good work from Pogba as he slid in Giroud whose shot deflects over the goalkeeper and Mbappe was on hand to tap in.
The young Frenchman has now been directly involved in eight goals in his last nine games for France (4 goals, 4 assists).
It seemed Antoine Griezmann wasn't the only forward to benefit from Olivier Giroud's start.
PERU AREN'T QUITE READY
Peru's agonising loss to France today sees them extend an unfortunate run. The South American side are winless in their last eight World Cup matches (D2 L6), scoring just two goals in this run.
They've been refreshingly attack-minded, but for all their exciting play, they have lacked a cutting edge up front.
FRANCE LIKE SOUTH AMERICAN OPPOSITION
France's win over Peru sees them extend a run against South American opponents.
France have kept a clean sheet in each of their last seven World Cup games against South American sides – last conceding in a World Cup quarter-final against Brazil in 1986.
FRANCE HAVE A RECORD BREAKER
Predominantly deployed on the right-hand side Kylian Mbappe sniffed out a goal-scoring opportunity as Giroud was released by Pogba. As all good strikers do, Mbappe was on hand to finish the chance presented to him and go down in French folklore.
The PSG forward became the youngest player to ever score a goal for France at a major tournament (19 years 183 days).
It may have been a tap-in, but they all count!
PERU DON'T HAVE A GOALSCORER
Edison Flores and Peru talisman Paolo Guerrero led the line with Jefferson Farfan coming on at halftime to join the attack. However, this was to no avail as the side failed to score yet again.
Peru have now attempted 27 shots without scoring at the 2018 World Cup finals; only Morocco (28) have had more without a goal.
