Interview: Sarah Sees The Truth
There have been many ups and downs for Sarah and Gary, but can their relationship survive any more of Gary's lies? We spoke to Tina O'Brien to find out!
Gary’s been hiding things from Sarah again, are you surprised by how much she’s put up with in the past?
Sarah assumes that Gary’s heart is in the right place and maybe she overlooks things that she shouldn’t. I definitely wouldn’t be as reasonable in her shoes. I’d be like: "Sorry? You had a baby with another person? Bye bye!"
But she thinks they’re a good team and she knows that he loves her and wants to be with her, so she’s probably a bit more forgiving than she should be.
Bethany is suspicious of Gary after she sees him changing from his builders clothes into a suit. How does Sarah react to when Bethany tells her?
Well, Gary flatly denies it. Sarah tells Bethany she believes her, and wonders why Gary is lying, so she decides to find out what is going on. She follows him and sees him getting into a van with a woman.
When Sarah tackles Gary, he eventually confesses that he’s in debt to a loan shark. How does Sarah react?
Sarah is upset that he lied to her. People have money problems and can build up debts and she can totally understand that. She feels wretched for him that he’s lost everything – she isn’t with him for the money – she genuinely loves him.
She had absolutely no idea what was going on. Gary very convincingly told her that the reason he had some money was that he got paid for a job in advance and I don’t think she had any reason to doubt him. She believed the days of him lying to her were over.
Does she feel the trust is gone?
A relationship is very much built on trust and communication. Sarah desperately wants this from Gary but I can understand why he kept Rick's involvement from her. But I think every time he keeps secrets it knocks another hole in their relationship.
I don’t know how much more of this she can take, and it remains to be seen whether they can get through this.
Do you think they’ll stay together?
I think it's more a question of whether the relationship can survive much longer when there’s such a lack of communication. She’s quite a tolerant partner, but she’s sick of the lies.In the past, I would have said they could definitely have got over this, but this time I’m not sure.
At this point, although Sarah still loves him, she’s very doubtful whether they have a future together.
