Evolution Of The Set

With our new Victoria Street set now revealed, let's take a look at the evolution of the famous cobbles over the years...

1960-1968

When Coronation Street began in December 1960 the Street itself was represented by an interior set at Granada Television Studios.

Originally the pavement and cobblestones were painted on the studio floor.

The viaduct and the Corner Shop end were no more than a scenic backdrop.

1982-2013

In 1981 building began on a large scale set with proper roofs and a segment of Rosamund Street.

On May 5th 1982 the new set was officially opened by the Queen and Prince Philip.

Rosamund street was also the home of the Graffiti Club Disco.

Alf Roberts took over the corner shop in 1985 until it was taken over again in 1994.

CORRIE FACT: The famous Corner Shop has had 14 owners over the years!

1999

In 1999 the exterior set was again extended and updated. The derelict Graffiti Club on Rosamund Street was revamped and reopened as a Medical Centre.

A new street, Victoria Street, was built to house several shops, including Roys Rolls, and two houses.

The Builder’s Yard was also built on the other side of this street.

2014 - 2017

The new set on Trafford Wharf Road took two years to build and to accurately replicate the old set. The street was also widened so vehicles could pass each other.

An extra window was also added to the front of the Rovers. Filming began on the new set in January 2014.

2018 - Wider Weatherfield

2018 has seen the extension of Victoria Street which is now the home to Speed Daal, Weatherfield North tram stop, the Urban Gardens, a Tattoo parlour, estate agents and there is also a new exterior set of Weatherfield police station.
