No BTCC return for Blundell as F1 star hangs up his helmet
Mark Blundell has announced his retirement from racing, after a swansong season in the British Touring Car Championship.
The former Le Mans winner, who also took part in 61 Formula One Grands Prix, made the announcement on his Instagram page earlier today.
53-year-old Blundell struggled with the intensive nature of BTCC racing last season, scoring only five points, while his team mate Jake Hill was fighting for podium finishes.
"Time to let the cat out of the bag and sign off from my racing career," wrote Blundell.
"For thirty years I’ve given it my all behind the wheel, met the most amazing people and enjoyed moments I’ll never forget. Last year’s BTCC adventure was exactly that and I loved the challenge of getting back behind the wheel...can’t be too many grandads who have competed in the BTCC!"
2019 team mate Jake Hill said "Thank you for becoming a friend, mentor in ways, and just a really good bloke to me.
"Loved working with you Mark and I'm sure I’ll be seeing you soon thank you for everything."
Despite hanging up his helmet, Blundell will continue his motorsport involvement through his sports management company MB Partners which manages drivers including 2018 DTM champion Gary Paffett, Formula 2 racer Callum Ilott and Indycar driver Jordan King.
