Moffat and Paterson form all-Scottish line-up at Laser Tools
Young Scottish driver Dexter Patterson will join Laser Tools Racing for the 2022 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship, after impressing during a recent test in one of the squad’s championship winning Infinitis.
The 18-year-old enjoyed a successful karting career, which included winning Super 1 National and Formula Kart Stars titles in 2015, victory in the Kartmasters British Grand Prix in the Rotax Mini Max class the following year, before securing a triumph in the Trofeo delle Industrie and winning the Karting World Championship in 2017.
Regional F4 outings in 2020 marked his foray into car racing, before Patterson graduated to the BRDC British Formula 3 Championship earlier this year, claiming a maiden podium in only his third race.
The recent tin-top run at Snetterton – working alongside multiple BTCC race-winner Moffat – proved to be a pivotal outing, and now Laser Tools Racing has taken the decision to run the youngster alongside his countryman for next year’s BTCC season.
“I loved the Infiniti,” said Patterson. “It is certainly different to the single-seaters that I’m used to! It was a bit slippery in the morning session, but as the track dried off in the afternoon we went onto slicks and I was very happy with my lap times.
“The brakes take a bit of getting used to though — in the single-seater I can see when the tyres are about to lock up and I can brake much later. So, I’m really looking forward to the extended test sessions pre-season and of course, getting used to the new hybrid car. What an opportunity!”
Martin Smith, Chairman of Laser Tools, added: “We are delighted to sign up Dexter Patterson and feel that he will be the driver to watch in the 2022 BTCC season. Combined with Aiden Moffat's abilities both on the track and with his coaching experience, we're confident that we've assembled another winning team.”
