Austin remembers Superprix as he's sent to Coventry
Dunlop British Touring Car Championship driver Rob Austin will be among the star attractions at this weekend’s Coventry MotoFest when he performs spectacular demonstration runs in his Audi ‘Sherman’ on the city’s streets.
The event’s course runs along Coventry’s Ring Road. Last year’s inaugural event attracted 70,000 people – many of them new to motor sport with cars from a variety of categories performing demonstration runs.
Rob commented: “What a fantastic event – as soon as I was invited I jumped at the chance. Who wouldn’t want to run their touring car at an event like this?
“We all remember the BTCC street races at the old Birmingham Super Prix events in the late Eighties and the BTCC city centre events in the mid Noughties. Putting on events like those have become near impossible since – the closest I’ve come is racing my Seventies Surtees F1 car on the Monaco Grand Prix circuit in the historic event there.
“I’m really looking forward to putting Sherman through his paces on Coventry’s Ring Road – it will be a unique challenge but what an opportunity to put on a show for the crowds.”
James Noble, Festival Director said: “We are thrilled to have Rob Austin taking part in this year’s Motofest.
“Rob is one of the BTCC’s most flamboyant and spectacular drivers, as well as being one of the most popular drivers among the fans who follow the championship.
“It’s another fantastic opportunity for those attending Motofest to see race cars up close driven by true legends of the track and we look forward to seeing Rob putting Sherman through his paces on our unique ring road sprint circuit.”
