Tokio Myers: "Since winning BGT, every day has been like my birthday"

What a week it’s been for our BGT 2017 winner Tokio Myers!

From stepping out on stage at his first Audition to being crowned your champion at the Grand Final, Tokio has had quite the ride, with the star telling us he feels “on top of the world” since winning the series.

Speaking of how life has been since his victory, Tokio revealed: “I don’t think it’s really kicked in just yet. I feel like since winning BGT, every day has been like my birthday!

“People have been so supportive and showing so much love and I’m just very thankful for everyone who voted. It’s been amazing.”

When asked what was going through his mind when Ant & Dec announced his name, the star confessed: “My mind went completely blank! I collapsed onto the floor in disbelief and shock. It was a dream come true.”

With Judge Simon Cowell branding Tokio “very special”, Tokio said of Simon: “He understands the music industry and he knows what’s good and to have that kind of feedback from him is just incredible. I’m very honoured by that.”

Following his win, Alesha said she could see him working with the likes of Ed Sheeran and Skepta, with Tokio himself also keen for a collaboration himself, stating: “I would love to work with Ed… He’s just an incredible artist, a great person and I think we would both compliment each other well musically. And Skepta as well, I love what he’s doing.”

"There’s a list of artists from Frank Ocean, to The Weeknd, to Adele, to Nigel Kennedy, to maybe even do something with Lang Lang. Even a cellist, a ballet dancer, you know, it would be good to collaborate and for me to push people in ways they wouldn’t necessary go and create something that’s really original and unique.”

As for his biggest inspirations in music, Tokio named US duo Twenty One Pilots and rapper Travis Scott, explaining: “We are nothing alike, however, the energy that they bring and they really get into their music live. I watch that and I get inspired.

“Jack Garrett is another guy as well, you should see the expressions on his face and I feel like those guys know how to connect with an audience and I find that really cool, to wear your heart on your sleeve.”

And finally, what can we expect from Tokio’s forthcoming stint at the Royal Variety Performance? Another epic piece of music of course! He stated: “I’m actually really excited about that, just to be given the opportunity to perform in front of the Royal Family is just incredible.

“I mean, it’s everyone’s dream and I’m very excited about the piece that I play on the day. I’ve got lots of time between now and then. I’m going to be writing, producing and coming up with compositions, so I think by then, everything will be at a very heighten point and I’m excited to play."

We can’t wait to see what Tokio has in store!
