Balance Unity: 'I want to make the Queen smile'

Balance Unity left our Judges open-mouthed on Saturday’s show (April 23), with the 17-year old taking us all for a trip in his dance move time machine!

After featuring the likes of Elvis, Michael Jackson and even our own Susan Boyle in his routine, we caught up with the dancer to find out more…

When it comes to dancing, he just wants to make people happy!

When asked what made him want to audition for BGT, Balance - real name Taylor Goodridge - revealed: “I like impressing an audience when I perform, so it made sense to go for Britain’s Got Talent because it’s the biggest talent contest in the world. I felt like I could reach a lot of people and make a lot of people happy.” Awwww…

Simon Cowell isn’t as scary as he looks

Speaking of whether he was nervous backstage, Taylor said: “I kind of used that nervous energy and put that into my dance. I was quite chill throughout the day and when I did perform, I was so relaxed and so happy. My main worry was Simon Cowell. He’s lovely really. He’s definitely not as scary as people make out.” As for Simon’s positive comments, he added: “It’s beautiful as a dancer to hear that from someone so professional, so high up and someone who has such great knowledge in the creative arts. It was lovely to hear.”

His Elvis move was the hardest to ace

Getting Elvis’ legs on point was the most difficult part of his routine, with Taylor explaining: “He had some crazy legs and I remember spending a lot of time trying to perfect that one, it was very difficult but I thought I’d open with it and yeah, people seemed to like it. It was also quite difficult learning the MoonWalk, I spent a lot of my life trying to pick that one up. To be able to perform these iconic people’s dance moves drove me forward and made me feel really happy to be doing what I was doing at that moment. I couldn’t wish to be anywhere else at that point."

He can’t believe he got Alesha up on her feet

Alesha couldn’t resist getting out of her Judges’ chair and joining in with Balance’s routine, with Taylor stating: “It was so hard not to point and start smiling and go mad with it. I saw her stand up and yeah, it just gave me that confidence on stage and provided me with the energy I needed. It was cool.”

Susan Boyle isn’t his only BGT inspiration

After appearing to nail Su-Bo’s wiggling hips, Taylor teased that Susan's not the only previous Britain’s Got Talent act who he's inspired by. He claimed: “Every single act that goes on there is inspirational and I believe that everyone who takes part in the show is extraordinary. You’ve seen the likes of Diversity, you’ve seen the likes of George Sampson. It’s so amazing to appreciate the other talents and the other acts the show has to bring.”

Expect some more unique routines

As well as being inspired by the acts of BGT past, Taylor added that he actually takes on board aspects of everyday life into his work. He noted: “My biggest inspiration in terms of dance doesn’t actually come from anyone individual, it’s more from dance culture and how dancers interact with each other. That and aspects from every day life, like people walking, tying their shoelaces, I’ll put that in a routine and take that move and make it my own.”

He wants to make the Queen smile

Concluding that his BGT journey so far has been an “enlightening experience”, Taylor also revealed it would be “amazing” to win and perform for the Queen at the Royal Variety Performance. He added: “I hope I can make her happy and give her a similar smile as I did with Simon.”

Britain’s Got Talent returns to ITV this Saturday (April 30) at 8pm!
