Her Majesty The Queen: Behind Closed Doors

In the past year alone 2.1 million people aged 16 and over in England and Wales experienced some form of domestic abuse. There were 1.4 million female (5.7% of women) victims and 751,000 male victims. This means 1 in 6 men, and 1 in 4 women will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime and at least one woman a week is killed by their current or ex-partner. Horrifyingly, it is estimated that 30 women a day consider taking their lives, and around 3 women a week die by suicide, because of domestic abuse. No one should face domestic abuse alone. Below are the charities that we worked with on this film and they provide vital support, so victims don’t have to. Please do reach out if you are worried about yourself or someone else, if it is safe to do so.

THE CHARITIES

Refuge supports thousands of survivors on any given day, and every two minutes someone looks to Refuge for help. We also run the National Domestic Abuse Helpline, which is the gateway to accessing specialist support across the country. More than one in four women in England and Wales experiences domestic abuse at some point in their lifetime, and on average every five days a woman is killed by a current or former partner. Refuge, the largest UK domestic abuse organisation for women.

SafeLives, is the UK-wide charity dedicated to ending domestic abuse, for everyone and for good. We work with organisations to transform the response to domestic abuse, at a local, national and societal level. They believe every survivor, adult and child, should get the right help for them, at the right time for them, and perpetrators and those who harm should be challenged to change. We know it isn’t always easy for people to recognise domestic abuse in their relationships, and it can be hard to reach out for help. That is why we are asking you to ‘Reach In’.

Women’s Aid is the national charity working to end domestic abuse against women and children. Since 1974 we have been at the forefront of shaping and coordinating responses to domestic abuse, with survivors at the heart of our work. We are a federation of over 170 organisations which provide just under 300 local lifesaving services to women and children across the country.

Our support services help thousands of women and children every year. We provide expert training, qualifications and consultancy to a range of agencies and professionals working with survivors or commissioning domestic abuse services. Our campaigns achieve change in policy, practice and awareness, encouraging healthy relationships and helping to build a future where domestic abuse is no longer tolerated. If you are looking for help, please visit our support page.

I Choose Freedom are an independent charity that provide refuge and a path to freedom to 39 survivors and up to 65 children fleeing domestic abuse at one time. We have refuges in East and West Surrey. We have 3 communal refuges for women and their children and 9 self-contained refuges for any survivor of domestic abuse. Based in Surrey, we are fully accessible to anyone needing a refuge space, in particular those who face additional barriers in coming to refuge – male survivors, survivors from the LGQT+ community and Gypsy Roma traveller community. We are also one of the few refuges who accept teenage boys and survivors with no recourse to public funds/unstable immigration status. Survivors in our care are the highest risk, they are at risk of murder if they were to remain in the family home. Survivors often arrive with nothing but the clothes they are wearing, leaving behind everything they know and own including jobs, properties, schools, friends, family, pets etc.
