Remember, deals can change quickly, even while I’m on the programme. So always double-check the terms and conditions before spending. Plus, while I hope these deals will save you cash, don’t spend if you can’t afford it, don’t need it, or won’t use it.
Last chance: Tesco Clubcard double-up
Tesco is making big changes to its loyalty scheme. This will be the last time it’s running its hugely popular Clubcard ‘double-up’ promotion – though what it’s planning to replace it with is still unknown.
From now until Sunday 26 June, you can swap every £5 of Clubcard vouchers for £10 in 11 categories including toys, entertainment, garden, home, cosmetics, sport and travel, both in store and online at Tesco Direct. So, for example, you could get a £160 kids' mountain bike reduced to £70 for just £35 in vouchers.
Before that, though, check if you can quadruple rewards by redeeming vouchers via Tesco Clubcard partners – this is staying and won’t be scrapped. You can get 3x or 4x the points’ value. For example, a £10 voucher becomes £40 at Café Rouge or £30 at Goldsmiths jewellers.
A quick tip: Log in to your Tesco Clubcard account and under the ‘my vouchers’ section (found on the left-hand side) you’ll be able to find any lost or unused vouchers going back two years. This can be huge as AnnaV found. She said: "WOW – I've got £413 of unspent vouchers. Ridiculously excited."
Pay £1ish for £65ish of PC games
Humble Bundle is a US charitable gaming company which sells games donated from software firms and you decide how much to pay. Its latestHumble Capcom Bundlemoney goes to the Japanese Earthquake Relief appeal.
The minimum you can pay is $1 (about 70p) and then you get four games: Strider; Resident Evil Revelations 2, Penal Colony; Lost Planet 3 Complete Pack; and Bionic Commando: Rearmed – which collectively would normally cost £65ish (playable on PC, not Mac). If you pay more than the average donation, currently $9.23, you get five more games, includingResident Evil Revelations, DmC: Devil May Cry and Bionic Commando. And if you pay $15 you get two more games, adding Devil May Cry 4: Special EditionandResident Evil 6 to the pack, which comes to a total value of over £200.
To get the games you need to download it from the free games platformSteam.
£1 kids’ book sale: Go online to children’s bookseller Scholastic and you’ll find more than 150 popular kids’ books from £1 each until 11.59pm tomorrow (Friday). There’s a minimum £10 spend on books, plus you’ll need to factor in the £3 delivery charge. The £1 books include The Gruffalo, Skylanders Universe and Thor: The Dark World. The books can usually cost up to £5.99 so this is a good deal for parents who want to stock up, though stock is limited so go quick if there’s something you want.
Reclaim £100s or even £1,000s in unfair overdraft charges
On Tuesday the Competition and Markets Authority proposed a cap on the amount banks can charge for going into your unarranged overdraft. Though how exactly this would work hasn’t been set out, I want to remind you that some can still claim back old unfair charges, which could be worth £100s or even £1,000s. Only recently fourmite Alfie0611 said, “Totally awesome I got my refund after writing to NatWest. Had to wait just over the 8 weeks and I did submit complaint to the FOC last Thursday so thought it would be a lot longer but received a call today. They’ve agreed to refund £2,500. Thanks, without finding this info I would never have known”.
Yet the days of everyone being able to do this are long gone. I was at the Supreme Court when it ruled against that on a technicality, though by then those of us campaigning had managed to help get people over £1bn back.
Now you can only make a complaint to your bank if…1) You’re in genuine financial hardship 2) You had charges that were disproportionate to the issue, eg, you were £1 overdrawn and had £25 charges3) You were stuck in a cycle of charges you couldn’t get out of
If so, write a formal complaint to the bank and explain how the charges caused you hardship, and if that fails, go to the Ombudsman. Full free downloadable template letters are available in Martin’s ‘Reclaim bank charges’ guide. There are no guarantees you’ll get money back, but it works for some.
