Martin's 90-Second Savers

Are you due up to £212 of the married couple’s allowance? Up to two kids’ Eurostar tickets for £1 each, Boots meal deal for £1 and £12 Pimm’s for Wimbledon. These are our Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis’ 90 Second Savers.

Remember, deals can change quickly, even while I’m on the programme. So always double-check the terms and conditions before spending. Plus, while I hope these deals will save you cash, don’t spend if you can’t afford it, don’t need it, or won’t use it.

Are you due up to £212/year with the marriage tax allowance?

If you’re married or in a civil partnership, you may be able to get up to £212 a year in your pocket with the new marriage allowance. It’s a new way for couples to transfer a proportion of their personal allowance (the amount you can earn tax-free each tax year) between them. You’ll be eligible if:

  • You’re married or in a civil partnership

  • One of you needs to be earning £10,600 or less (not including any of your £5,000 tax-free savings interest)

  • The other one of you needs to be a basic-rate taxpayer (couples with a higher or additional-rate taxpayer aren’t eligible)

  • Both of you must have been born after 6 April 1935

The partner who has an unused amount of personal allowance can transfer £1,060 of their allowance to the other (so basically 10% of the full allowance). It doesn't matter if they have £3,000 of their allowance left unused or £5,000; they can only transfer £1,060.You need to register with HMRC but it can take up to 14 weeks from registering to receive an invitation to apply.
