A two acre beach at Bigbury-on-sea in South Devon has been bought at auction for £70,000 by a telephone bidder. The selling price was more than twice the guide price listed by the auctioneers.

One of Devon's most famous beaches went under the hammer today in a controversial auction. Bigbury-on-Sea, is part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the south of the county.

Two acres of beach and frontage were put up for sale with a guide price of 30 thousand pounds - but raised more than double. Jonathan Gibson was there.

The sale of the beach was described in the auction catalogue as a "once in a lifetime opportunity".
